Acaena novae-zelandiae (Bidgee-widgee)
Acaena novae-zelandiae, commonly known as Bidgee-widgee, is a low-growing, perennial herb native to the coastal and grassland areas of Australia and New Zealand, including the Melbourne Sandbelt region. Typically reaching a height of 10-30 cm (4-12 inches), this plant features attractive, trifoliate leaves that form a dense mat.
In summer, it produces small, round, and spiky flower heads that give way to distinctive burrs, which can attach to clothing and fur. Acaena novae-zelandiae thrives in well-drained soils and is highly tolerant of drought, making it an excellent choice for ground cover in low-maintenance gardens. Its dense growth habit helps suppress weeds and provides habitat for small wildlife. With its unique foliage and ecological benefits, New Zealand Burr is a valuable addition to native gardens, enhancing biodiversity and soil stability.
